Kerry’s Airplane Travel Emits More CO2 Than 2,700 American Homes
John Kerry may be responsible for emitting more carbon dioxide emissions than any other Secretary of State in U.S. history.
Kerry has flown more than 1.06 million miles as the top U.S. diplomat, according to the Associated Press,
surpassing the airline travel of all former secretaries, including
Hillary Clinton and Condoleezza Rice. And Kerry will rack up even more
miles as he finishes out his tenure in in the Obama administration.
That’s a lot of carbon dioxide emissions for someone who consistently
sounds the alarm on man-made global warming, which he says is mainly
fossil fuel driven. Kerry recently gave a speech
about how not stopping fossil fuels would result in “most of lower
Manhattan … flooded by the very end of this very century – during the
life span of babies born today.”
Kerry has emitted more than 30,000 tons of CO2 from his flights to 80 countries around the world
while heading the State Department. As Secretary of State, Kerry flies a
Boeing 757, which burns 3 gallons of jet fuel every mile it travels.
Kerry has used 3.2 million gallons of jet fuel flying more than 1.06
million miles, which means his air travel emitted nearly 67.1 million pounds of CO2.
